What is an IP address?
An IP address is the number that identifies your connection on the internet. Websites need it to send data back to you. At home, every device on your Wi-Fi usually shares one public IP address assigned by your internet provider.
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.7 and are running out. IPv6 addresses look like 2001:db8::7 and are far more plentiful. Many connections have both, and your browser picks one for each site.
How accurate is IP location?
It usually identifies your country correctly and often your city or region, but it can be off by a long way. It shows where your provider registers the address, not your exact location.
Why does my IP address change?
Most home and mobile providers assign addresses dynamically, so yours can change when your router restarts or your phone switches networks. Fixed addresses are usually a paid business option.
How can I hide my IP address?
A VPN or proxy sends your traffic through another server, so websites see that server’s address instead of yours. If your browser time zone doesn’t match your IP location, that is often a sign one is in use.
